The Emptiness of the Scottish Highlands
Scotland is empty.
Not empty like abandoned. Empty like... spacious. Like the land has room to breathe.
Driving north from Edinburgh. The cities fade. The towns shrink. The villages disappear.
Then it is just one person. And the Highlands. And an impossible amount of green.
Stopping at a layby. Getting out. Listening.
Nothing.
Not true silence. Wind. Birds. A distant sheep.
But no traffic. No construction. No voices.
Standing there for twenty minutes. Not taking a photo. Not checking the phone.
Just standing.
The Isle of Skye is famous now. Instagram made it popular. The Fairy Pools. The Old Man of Storr. Quiraing.
Going to the Fairy Pools. Finding a hundred other people. All photographing. All posting.
Leaving. Driving to an unnamed loch instead. Sitting on a rock. Eating a sandwich.
A family of ducks swims past. The ducklings follow their mother in a perfect line.
Laughing. Out loud. To myself.
Meeting a hiker on the West Highland Way. Australian. Walking the entire thing. Solo.
"Why?"
"Why not?"
Good answer.
Walking together for an hour. Not speaking much. Not needing to.
At a crossroads, he goes left. Going right.
"See you in Glasgow?"
"Maybe."
Never seeing each other again.
The weather changes six times in one day.
Sun. Rain. Hail. Fog. More sun. More rain.
A local at a pub explains: "If you do not like the weather, wait five minutes."
"Does it ever stop raining?"
"Never."
He smiles. Smiling back. Both knowing he is lying.
Glasgow is a shock. After a week of emptiness, the city feels crowded. Loud. Alive.
Going to a pub. Ordering a pint. The bartender asks where been.
"Highlands. Skye. West Coast."
"Alone?"
"Mostly."
He nods. "You are one of the brave ones."
"Do not feel brave."
"Does not matter. You did it."
Leaving Scotland with a camera full of photos that will never be looked at.
And a memory of silence. Of green. Of a land that does not need visitors.
That was there before.
That will be there after.
The Highlands do not care about Instagram.
They just are.
And somehow, that is the most comforting thing in the world.
