The Japan Nobody Sees

The Japan Nobody Sees

Everyone goes to Tokyo. To Kyoto. To Osaka.

Went to the Japanese Alps.

To a village without a name.

Takayama is the gateway. Traditional. Beautiful. Touristy.

Passed through.

Went deeper.

Shirakawa-go is famous. Thatched roofs. UNESCO site. Busloads of tourists.

Stayed one night.

After the buses left, the village was silent.

An old woman swept her porch.

Walked past. She bowed.

Bowed back.

The Alps rose around.

Snow-capped. Forest-covered. Sacred.

Hiked the Nakasendai Trail.

Old. Used by samurai. Merchants. Pilgrims.

Now: me. And a few others.

A ryokan in the mountains.

No wifi. No TV. No English.

The owner spoke with her hands.

Understood.

Dinner: local fish. Mountain vegetables. Rice.

Breakfast: the same.

Did not mind.

The onsen was outside.

Hot water. Cold air. Snow falling.

Soaked.

Thought about nothing.

For the first time in years.

Left the Alps after a week.

The old woman was still sweeping.

She saw. Smiled.

Smiled back.

Did not speak.

Did not need to.

The Japan nobody sees is not hidden.

It is just... quiet.

Waiting.

For visitors who want more than temples.

More than photos.

More than checkmarks.

Found it.

In the Alps.

In the silence.

In the space between words.

And will be back.

To sweep the porch.

To bow.

To say nothing.

To understand everything.
